How CGPA converts to a percentage

There is no single number you can multiply a CGPA by to get a percentage. The HEC conversion sheet uses one band per ten-point range of marks, and each band has its own slope. Your CGPA is converted using whichever band it falls into. That is why a 0.10 rise in CGPA is worth about 2.7 percentage points in the upper bands but nearly 1.5 in the middle ones.

Enter your CGPA and pick the scale your transcript uses. That is 4.0 for almost every Pakistani university, and 5.0 for the few that grade differently. The percentage updates as you type. Values outside the valid range are pulled back into it rather than producing nonsense.

You usually need this for a scholarship form, a job application, or a foreign university that asks for a percentage instead of a GPA. Get the number here first. If the application needs an official figure, have your examination office certify it.

The Formula

// 4.0 scale — first matching band wins, evaluated top downCGPA ≥ 3.63 → (CGPA − 0.30) ÷ 0.037CGPA ≥ 3.25 → (CGPA − 0.29) ÷ 0.037CGPA ≥ 2.88 → (CGPA − 0.36) ÷ 0.036CGPA ≥ 2.50 → (CGPA − 0.28) ÷ 0.037CGPA ≥ 1.80 → (CGPA + 1.65) ÷ 0.069CGPA ≥ 1.00 → (CGPA + 2.16) ÷ 0.079CGPA > 0 → CGPA ÷ 0.0248

The 5.0 scale works the same way, with every band shifted up by one grade point. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

Worked Examples

Example 1: a 3.40 CGPA on the 4.0 scale

3.40 falls in the 3.25–3.62 band, so the second formula applies.

Band selected3.40 ≥ 3.25 → (CGPA − 0.29) ÷ 0.037
Numerator3.40 − 0.29 = 3.11
Divide by the band slope3.11 ÷ 0.037 = 84.05
Result3.40 CGPA ≈ 84.05%

Example 2: a 4.10 CGPA on the 5.0 scale

On the 5.0 scale the bands sit one point higher, so 4.10 lands in the 3.88–4.24 band.

Band selected4.10 ≥ 3.88 → (CGPA − 1.36) ÷ 0.036
Numerator4.10 − 1.36 = 2.74
Divide by the band slope2.74 ÷ 0.036 = 76.11
Result4.10 CGPA on a 5.0 scale ≈ 76.11%

HEC Reference Grading Scale

This is the HEC reference grading scale. You are seeing it because you are on the main Campus Plus site rather than a university subdomain. Open this converter on your university's subdomain and it shows that university's own scale instead. Most Pakistani universities set their own bands rather than using this one as it stands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which formula does this converter use?

The HEC CGPA-to-percentage conversion sheet. This is the formula Pakistani universities and HEC attestation use. It works in bands: each ten-point range of percentage has its own slope, so the conversion is not one simple multiplication. Both directions use the same bands, so converting a CGPA to a percentage and back gives you the number you started with.

Why does my university quote a different percentage than this?

Because two similar rules are in use. This converter uses the HEC formula, which is continuous. The HEC grading table instead maps a grade point to a whole band of marks, and a transcript or equivalence letter often reads a CGPA as the lowest percentage in its band. Under that rule a CGPA of 3.00 sits at the bottom of the B band and is quoted as about 71%, where the formula gives a little over 73%. Neither is wrong. Use whichever one the office asking for the number wants.

Should I pick the 4.0 or the 5.0 scale?

Whichever one your transcript uses. Almost every Pakistani university grades on 4.0, including COMSATS and FAST-NUCES, so that is the default here. The 5.0 option is for the smaller number of institutions on that scale. It shifts every band up by one point rather than rescaling the whole thing.

Is this accurate enough for a scholarship or foreign application?

It follows the HEC formula exactly, but it is not an official document. Scholarship boards, foreign universities and HEC equivalence usually want the percentage printed on an official transcript, or an equivalence certificate from your university's examination office. Use this to know your number in advance, then get it certified.

Can I convert a single semester GPA rather than a CGPA?

Yes. The arithmetic does not care whether the number came from one semester or a whole degree, so entering an SGPA gives you that semester's percentage. Keep in mind that anyone asking for 'your percentage' almost always means the cumulative figure.

Why does a low CGPA convert to such a low percentage?

The bottom band is much steeper than the rest. Above 40% the bands rise gently. Below it the formula drops sharply, so a CGPA under 1.00 converts to a very low percentage. That is the HEC formula working as written, not a rounding error. The bands were fitted to the passing range, where nearly every real transcript sits.
